What is the English Electric Lightning? One of the world’s fastest and most capable supersonic interceptor fighters:
It has a greater than 1:1 power-to-weight ratio. It was the primary air defense fighter for the UK from 1960 until 1988, intercepting Soviet bombers on a daily basis. The Lightning was the first and only supersonic all-British fighter/interceptor. Its unique design features two turbojets mounted one above the other in the fuselage with reheat units at the aft end. The single- or dual-seat cockpit is located on top of the nose intake. The two-seat trainer features a side-by-side arrangement that actually increased performance. Lightning Specifications
